Three rules for safe leftovers

Fridge within 2 hours

Food left out longer than 2 hours at room temperature should be thrown away. Slice the ham off the bone and chill it in shallow containers.

Count 4 days

Most cooked leftovers are good for 3–4 days in the fridge (ham up to 5). Christmas 2026 is on a Friday, so eat or freeze them by Tuesday.

Reheat to 165 °F

Reheat leftovers until steaming hot (165 °F / 74 °C in the middle). Bring gravy to a rolling boil.

Questions

How long does leftover ham last in the fridge?

Cooked ham (spiral-cut, half or sliced) keeps 3–5 days in the fridge if it was refrigerated within 2 hours. A whole, store-wrapped cooked ham keeps about a week unopened. For longer, freeze it.

Can you freeze leftover ham?

Yes. Wrap slices or cubes tightly and freeze them for 1–2 months for best quality. Freeze the ham bone too; it makes a good soup or bean stock.

How long are Christmas leftovers good for?

Most cooked Christmas leftovers (turkey, roast beef, potatoes, gravy, stuffing) keep 3–4 days in the fridge, ham 3–5 days. Freeze what you will not eat by then.

Do I need to thaw leftovers before reheating?

No. You can reheat frozen leftovers straight from the freezer in a saucepan, oven or microwave, as long as they reach 165 °F. If you thaw them, do it in the fridge, not on the counter.

How do I keep track of what is in the fridge?

Pantry Buddy builds your pantry from a photo of your grocery receipt, estimates when each item expires and shows what to eat first, so the holiday shop gets used before it turns.
